The Risk Assessment Toolbox – Beyond Generic Risk Assessment
At BEK we consistently strive to use the all available scientific methods and advancements to address risks from contamination, in order to provide cost-effective, sustainable solutions for our client.
BEK recently carried a site investigation and contaminated land assessment at a vacant landscaped plot in Merseyside. The works were carried out to facilitate the construction of a single residential property and associated infrastructure. Comparison of the site investigation data against generic assessment criteria indicated the presence of elevated arsenic and lead contamination within the topsoil at the site.
In order to avoid potentially unnecessary, costly remediation at the site and in the interest of sustainable development, BEK liaised with the local authority to discuss our proposals for further, detailed quantitative risk assessment to determine the bio accessibility of the lead and arsenic and assess the potential risks to end users via ingestion.
The samples were tested using the Unified Barge Method which has been validated against data in living things to show its robustness. The assessment of the data is in line with current guidance and policy and proved that the risks from contamination at the site to be very low.
The risk assessment indicated that the risks from contamination within the topsoil were low thus, preventing the need to excavate and remove the soils from site and importing subsequent replacement soils.
